How to Increase Average Order Value on Shopify (7 Ways, Ranked by Effort)

Smart Sale Labs

More traffic is the expensive way to grow. Raising average order value is the quiet one: it lifts the return on every customer you have already paid to acquire, no new ads required. The catch is that not every AOV tactic is worth your time. Here are seven that work, ordered from the fastest, highest-leverage change to the ones that take real effort — so you start where the payoff is biggest.

1. Set a free shipping threshold above your AOV

This is the single highest-leverage change on the list, and it takes minutes — here is how to set it up on Shopify. Most shoppers will add an item to a cart to avoid paying for shipping, so a threshold set 15 to 25 percent above your average order value gives a typical shopper a reason to add one more thing. Set it at your AOV and it does nothing; set it above and it works on every order.

2. Show a cart progress bar

A threshold only works if shoppers know about it at the moment it matters. A line in the cart — “You’re $12 away from free shipping” — with a progress bar turns an abstract policy into a small, winnable goal. The same threshold converts far better with the nudge than without it.

3. Add cross-sells in the cart

A relevant suggestion at the point of checkout — “add this to complete your order” — beats a random pop-up every time. The key word is relevant: a recommendation that fits what is already in the cart helps the order along instead of interrupting it. Surface one good option, not five.

4. Build product bundles

Group products that naturally go together and price the bundle slightly below buying each item separately. Bundles raise AOV and do some of the choosing for the shopper, which reduces decision fatigue. Starter kits, “complete the look,” and refill sets all work.

5. Offer volume discounts

“Buy 2, save 10%. Buy 4, save 20%.” Tiered quantity pricing gives shoppers a concrete reason to size up. It works best for consumables and anything people buy in multiples — and it protects margin because the discount only triggers on bigger baskets.

6. Upsell to a better version

On the product page, present the higher-tier or larger option next to the standard one. A shopper already reaching for the $30 product is often a small nudge away from the $45 one — if you show it at the right moment and make the upgrade feel worth it.

7. Reward repeat spending

A loyalty or rewards program with spending tiers — points, a free gift at a threshold, members-only perks — lifts AOV over time. It is the most work to set up and maintain, which is why it is last: get the first six right before you build a program around them.

Start at the top

Most stores see a 10 to 30 percent AOV lift from combining just two or three of these — and numbers 1 and 2 are the fastest to ship. Before you start, know the number you are trying to move:
