Questions
Average order value, answered
What is average order value (AOV)?
Average order value is your total revenue divided by your number of orders over the same period. If a store made $20,000 across 400 orders, its AOV is $50 — what a typical customer spends per order.
How do I calculate average order value?
Divide total revenue by the number of orders for the same period. You can pull both figures from Shopify Analytics (Reports, then "average order value over time"), or enter them in the calculator above to get your AOV plus a revenue-uplift projection.
What is a good average order value?
It varies widely by industry — roughly $60 to $70 for beauty and pet categories, well over $200 for furniture and luxury, with a common global benchmark near $100 to $150. The more useful question is whether yours is trending up over time and ahead of your own past, not hitting a universal target.
How can I increase my average order value?
The fastest lever is a free shipping threshold set about 15 to 25 percent above your AOV, so shoppers add an item to qualify. Product bundles, cart upsells and cross-sells, and volume discounts also help. Most stores see a 10 to 30 percent lift from combining two or three tactics.
