Not sure what your threshold should be in the first place? That's a different question — find my recommended threshold →
Most Shopify merchants set their free shipping threshold once and never touch it again. But your average order value moves. Your threshold doesn't. The gap between them is costing you money every day - quietly, invisibly, at scale. This calculator shows you exactly where you stand.

Questions
Free shipping thresholds, answered
What is a free shipping threshold?
A free shipping threshold is the cart total a shopper has to reach to unlock free shipping — for example, 'free shipping over $75'. It's a deliberate nudge: shoppers add an item to qualify, which lifts your average order value.
How do I know if my free shipping threshold is set right?
Compare it to your average order value. The performing range sits roughly 15 to 25 percent above your AOV — high enough that most shoppers add an item to qualify, but not so high they give up. The calculator above shows the exact gap between your AOV and your threshold and what it means.
Should my free shipping threshold equal my average order value?
No. If the threshold equals your AOV, about half your orders already qualify and the nudge does nothing. Set it above your AOV — commonly 15 to 25 percent higher — so a typical shopper is just short and has a reason to add one more item.
What does the gap between my AOV and threshold mean?
The gap is how far a typical order sits below your free shipping threshold. A small gap (under about $5) means most shoppers barely need a nudge; a very large gap means your threshold may be too high and shoppers abandon before they get close. The sweet spot is a gap big enough to motivate one more item.
